Our Volcanoes
Arenal Volcano, Alajuela
The Arenal Volcano is the only volcano in Costa Rica constantly active since it woke up after 400 years with the big 1968 eruption producing huge ash columns, explosions & glowing red lava almost every day. It is considered one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world. This country is about beaches, rainforest and the spectacular Arenal.
Irazu Volcano, Cartago
Irazu Volcano is the tallest active volcano in Costa Rica, standing at a frigid 3,432 meters above sea level (11,259 feet). There are five craters to observe in this desolate moon space, with the main crater measuring more than 3,450 across and over 1000 feet deep. Irazu offers several types of craters, some containing small lakes. The park also protects 2,309 hectares of cloud and rain forest.
There are several paths to explore leading to the craters and waterfall. From the highest point in the park, on a clear day you can see both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea at the same time.
Poás volcano is a powerful symbol of the geothermal forces that formed Costa Rica. When the mist and clouds part you'll see the sulfuric, bubbling, green rain fed lake at the bottom, surrounded by smoke and steam rising from fumaroles. Water from the lake is constantly seeping through cracks in the hot rock, evaporating and building pockets of steam. When the pressure in these pockets exceeds the weight of the water above, the steam breaks through in geysers that rocket up to 820 feet (250 meters) high. Don't worry about getting a shower though, the crater is 1,050 feet (320 meters) deep. At almost a mile (1.6 km) across it's also the largest active crater in the world.
Poas Volcano, Alajuela
Poás is active, but don't expect to see a full fledged eruption or even any lava flow here, the most recent period of eruptive activity ended in 1954.
